Personal data

Definition of personal data

Personal data refers to any information relating to an identified or identifiable person. This information may be used alone or in combination with other information to identify a specific individual. Personal data encompasses a wide range of information, including but not limited to:

  • Identification information: This includes details such as surname, first name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, identification number, etc.
  • Demographic information: data such as age, gender, date of birth, nationality, family situation, etc.
  • Professional details: Place of work, position, job title, etc.
  • Financial information: details of income, financial transactions, bank account numbers, credit card information, etc.
  • Location data: Information about a person's physical location, often obtained from devices such as smartphones, GPS, etc.
  • Biometric data: Unique physical or behavioural characteristics, such as fingerprints, facial recognition, etc.
  • Health data: Information relating to a person's physical or mental health, including medical records, medical history, etc.
  • Online data: Information collected when using the Internet, such as browsing history, IP addresses, cookies, etc.

It is important to note that the definition of personal data may vary depending on the region and the law in force. For example, the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) offers a broad and protective definition of personal data, while other jurisdictions may have different criteria. In general, however, any information that can be used to identify a person is considered personal data and is subject to strict privacy protection rules.
